A drawer is better than nothing, but it's one place, in one building, with no backup. Cloud storage gives your pet's records protection a drawer can't.

The 3-2-1 idea

A common backup guideline is three copies of important files, on two different types of storage, with one copy in a different location. A drawer alone is one copy in one location.

What a drawer can't do

  • Protect against fire, flood or theft
  • Be reached from your phone at the vet's front desk
  • Be searched by name or date
  • Be shared instantly with a sitter, a groomer or a family member
  • Update itself when information changes

What cloud storage offers

  • Online access from a signed-in device when connectivity and the service are available
  • Files organized per pet; search tools depend on the particular service
  • Copies you can download and provide separately to people you choose

Protection from local disasters

A place to upload new records after each visit; files do not update themselves

Choose storage carefully

Pet records may include personal details. Look for a service that protects your account, offers strong sign-in security and lets you control who sees what.

A practical backup plan

  1. Scan every document in good light
  2. Upload to a digital pet health vault and name files consistently
  3. Keep paper originals of key documents, such as rabies certificates and travel papers
  4. Keep one extra copy somewhere else, such as a trusted family member's account or an external drive
  5. Check once a year that everything opens correctly

Make it a habit

Upload new documents the day you get them, while the paper is still in your hand. Waggle Vault is built to make that quick.

To get your documents updated, find a nearby veterinarian. For any questions, chat with a licensed vet on Waggle Vet.
