There's no single answer, because validity depends on who requires the certificate and where you're going. The date it was issued matters, and so does the date you travel.
Travel rules checked October 13, 2026. Verify the destination, transit route, airline and return requirements again before booking. A scan in a record store is not a government-issued certificate or a substitute for required originals. USDA APHIS reports new EU non-commercial certificates effective October 1, 2026; use the current destination-specific form, not an old downloaded template.
Typical timing windows
Domestic travel and airlines: many airlines and states want the certificate issued within a short period before travel, often around 10 days. Some states may accept a longer period, such as 30 days, for entry
International travel: the destination sets the window, and many require the certificate to be issued within about 10 days of arrival, sometimes with government endorsement inside that timeframe
Round trips: a certificate issued for your outbound trip may not cover the return. Check the rules for coming home
These are common examples, not rules for every situation.
Count days carefully
Windows are usually counted from the date the vet examined or signed the certificate to the date of entry. Delays or itinerary changes can push you outside the window.
Other expiry dates to watch
- Rabies vaccination validity and any waiting periods
- Test results with their own validity periods
- Parasite treatments that must occur within a set time
How to plan
- Confirm the window with your airline and destination
- Work backward from your departure date
- Add a buffer for weekends and holidays
- Put every date on a calendar or reminder
Set reminders in a separate phone calendar for expiration dates, and keep each certificate in your Waggle Vault. To schedule the exam, find a nearby veterinarian.
