Your pet's travel documents are small, but the cost of losing them can be big. A misplaced certificate can delay your trip or even stop it. A few habits keep your pet's paperwork safe.
Travel rules checked October 13, 2026. Verify the destination, transit route, airline and return requirements again before booking. A scan in a record store is not a government-issued certificate or a substitute for required originals. USDA APHIS reports new EU non-commercial certificates effective October 1, 2026; use the current destination-specific form, not an old downloaded template.
Carry originals with you
Keep official documents in your carry-on, never in checked baggage. Use a waterproof, zippered folder and keep it somewhere easy to reach.
Make copies, and make them in different places
Photocopy every page. Keep one set in a separate bag from the originals, and leave a copy with a trusted contact at home.
Scan and back up digitally
Scan all documents in good light and store readable copies. Before travel, download important files to your device and test them with its internet connection turned off. Do not assume a cloud record store works offline.
Record key numbers
Write your pet's microchip number, rabies certificate number and vet contact details on a card in your wallet and in your phone.
Make a travel checklist
- Passport or health certificate, with required endorsements
- Rabies certificate and vaccination records
- Test results and treatment dates
- Airline or carrier confirmations
- Contact details for your home vet and a vet at your destination
Share access with a travel partner
Give your travel partner copies of the documents they may need through a method you trust. Waggle Vault can store your records; do not assume it provides shared accounts or expiring sharing links.
Before you leave
Check expiration dates and timing windows, since a document that's valid today may not be on the day you fly. For a pre-trip check or to complete paperwork, find a nearby veterinarian.
