Losing your pet's travel documents abroad is stressful, but it's usually fixable. The faster you act, the more options you'll have.

Travel rules checked October 13, 2026. Verify the destination, transit route, airline and return requirements again before booking. A scan in a record store is not a government-issued certificate or a substitute for required originals. USDA APHIS reports new EU non-commercial certificates effective October 1, 2026; use the current destination-specific form, not an old downloaded template.

Step 1: Stay calm and check

Retrace your steps and check bags, jackets and rental cars. Documents sometimes turn up where you least expect them.

Step 2: Pull your backups

Open your digital copies. A scan of your pet's passport, rabies certificate and health certificate gives you the information you need to request replacements, and can support your case with officials.

Step 3: Contact the issuing vet

Contact the clinic that issued the documents. It can provide underlying records, but a scan is not automatically a replacement original. Ask the destination's competent veterinary authority what replacement or re-endorsement is legally acceptable, especially if you are already abroad.

Step 4: Talk to local authorities

Contact the local veterinary or agriculture authority, or the airline, to ask what proof they will accept. Your consulate or embassy may help point you in the right direction.

Step 5: Get a local vet if needed

Ask the local veterinary authority or embassy for a local veterinarian experienced in travel certification. Confirm onward travel and US re-entry requirements separately. Waggle's US clinic directory is not a worldwide certification directory.

Step 6: Rebuild your file

Once replaced, scan the new documents and save them in your Waggle Vault right away.

Prevent a repeat

Carry originals in a waterproof folder, keep copies in separate places and store scans online.

FAQs

Will I be denied entry without the passport?

It depends on the country and situation. Ask local authorities early.

Can I talk to a vet while abroad?

Availability and lawful scope depend on where you and the veterinarian are located. Contact a local veterinarian for urgent care and official travel certification.
