Pet-friendly doesn't always mean paperwork-free. Hotels, apartment landlords and vacation rentals often ask for documents to protect their property and other guests.
Travel rules checked October 13, 2026. Verify the destination, transit route, airline and return requirements again before booking. A scan in a record store is not a government-issued certificate or a substitute for required originals. USDA APHIS reports new EU non-commercial certificates effective October 1, 2026; use the current destination-specific form, not an old downloaded template.
What they commonly ask for
Proof of rabies and other vaccinations
- Pet details: breed, age, weight and photos
- Spay or neuter confirmation, at some properties
- License or registration, where required locally
- Pet agreement or addendum, with deposit or fees
Veterinarian's contact information
Pet insurance or renters insurance with pet liability, at some properties
Build a pet resume
Landlords often respond well to a one-page pet resume with:
- A recent photo
- Breed, age, weight and spay or neuter status
- Vaccination and prevention records
- Training or behavior notes
- References from previous landlords or trainers
- Your vet's contact information
Know the rules
Properties may have breed or weight restrictions, pet limits and fees. Read the policy carefully, and get approvals in writing.
Assistance animals
Assistance-animal rules differ between housing, hotels and air travel. Consult official HUD, ADA and DOT guidance for the applicable setting. Do not buy a supposed certification online expecting it to establish legal rights.
Have documents ready
Scan your pet's records, and keep them in your digital pet health vault so you can send them from your phone in minutes. For updated vaccines, find a nearby veterinarian.
Be a good guest
Follow house rules, clean up after your pet and avoid leaving them alone in unfamiliar spaces if they're anxious. If anxiety is a concern, chat with a licensed vet on Waggle Vet.
