Every airline sets its own pet policy, and destinations add their own rules on top. Check both well before you book.

Travel rules checked October 13, 2026. Verify the destination, transit route, airline and return requirements again before booking. A scan in a record store is not a government-issued certificate or a substitute for required originals. USDA APHIS reports new EU non-commercial certificates effective October 1, 2026; use the current destination-specific form, not an old downloaded template.

Documents airlines commonly ask for

  • Health certificate (CVI): some airlines require one for all pets, others for particular routes or cargo travel
  • Rabies vaccination certificate: frequently requested, and often required by destination law
  • Proof of other vaccinations: sometimes requested
  • Reservation confirmation for your pet: since pet spots are limited
  • International documents: destination-specific certificates, endorsements, test results and import permits
  • Acclimation statements: some airlines require them for cargo travel in extreme temperatures

Service animals and emotional support animals

Airline policies differ. In the US, airlines are no longer required to treat emotional support animals as service animals, while trained service dogs may need to complete specific forms. Check your airline's current rules.

Don't forget the destination

States and countries may have their own entry requirements, even for domestic flights, such as proof of rabies vaccination or a certificate within a set number of days.

Before you fly

  1. Read the airline's pet policy and call to confirm
  2. Check your destination's pet entry rules
  3. Schedule the vet exam within the required window
  4. Prepare originals and copies
  5. Confirm the carrier size requirements

Keep copies in your pet health vault, and carry originals in your carry-on. To book a pre-flight exam, find a nearby veterinarian.
