Is Nutmeg Dangerous for Dogs?

Nutmeg contains a compound called myristicin, which in large enough quantities has hallucinogenic and toxic effects — the amount typically found in a slice of pumpkin pie or a dusting on eggnog is unlikely to cause serious problems for most dogs, but a dog getting into a substantial amount of ground nutmeg or a whole nutmeg seed is a different situation entirely.

This one is worth including specifically because it's a common holiday-season ingredient, and the risk is genuinely dose-dependent in a way that's useful to understand rather than treating every trace exposure as equally dangerous.

Symptoms to watch for: with small amounts, mild digestive upset at most. With larger amounts: disorientation, elevated heart rate, dry mouth, and in significant ingestions, tremors or seizures, sometimes with a notable delay of several hours before onset.

What to do right now: for a slice of pie or a dusting of spice, monitoring at home is usually reasonable. For a container of ground nutmeg or a whole seed, treat it more seriously and get an assessment given the delayed and more severe potential effects.

When it's an emergency: any disorientation, elevated heart rate, or tremors, or any ingestion involving a substantial quantity of the spice itself rather than a small amount in a finished dish.
